The F stood for fighter, and the 8E designation represented the eighth generation of the F series of fighters. The aircraft was a significant improvement over its predecessor, the F-4B, with improved range, speed, and armament capabilities. Initially, it served as a fighter-bomber and universal combat aircraft, eventually becoming a dedicated air-superiority fighter.
