The F-11 Tiger is a supersonic fighter aircraft that was developed in the 1960s by Fairchild-Republic as a private venture following the cancellation of the USAF's Tactical Fighter Experimental (TFX) program. The F-11 was designed to be a highly agile and maneuverable fighter aircraft, with a unique layout that placed the cockpit well forward and the engine intakes beneath it.The F-11's innovative layout provided excellent handling characteristics, particularly at low speeds and altitudes. It was also equipped with advanced avionics and weapon systems, including an internal M61 Vulcan cannon and a variety of air-to-air and air-to-ground missiles. The F-11 saw limited service in the military, with the USAF operating a total of 98 aircraft between 1967 and 1989. It also served in the air forces of the Republic of China (Taiwan) and South Korea. While retiring the type, US Air Force described it as "a true classic" due to its innovative design, exceptional performance, and significant impact on the development of fighter aircraft technology.Today, a restored F-11 A-1 Tiger is displayed at the National Museum of the US Air Force in Dayton, Ohio. Its sleek design and impressive capabilities continue to fascinate aviation enthusiasts and inspire new generations of fighter aircraft development.
