The Coral MC-82 is a microcomputer system designed and manufactured by the British company Sinclair Research in the early 1980s. It is also known as ZX82 or ZX-82 due to its previous marketing by Sinclair under the ZX80 and ZX81 series.The MC-82 was a more powerful and updated version of the popular ZX81, featuring a Zilog Z80A CPU running at 3.072 MHz, faster than the 3.2768 MHz CPU used in the ZX81. It had 16 KB of RAM, expandable up to 64 KB through an expansion interface, which was twice the amount of the ZX81's 16 KB.The MC-82 also included advanced graphics capabilities, with the ability to display 32x16 or 64x48 monochrome graphics, or 32x24 color graphics through a built-in custom video generator circuit. This was a significant improvement over the ZX81's 16x16 monochrome graphics.The system came with a basic set of features, including a cassette interface for loading and saving programs and data, a keyboard, and a built-in floppy disc drive. Unlike the previous ZX81 models, the MC-82 had a built-in disc system unlike any other home computer system at that time, and it could operate two cassette or disc drives simultaneously.The MC-82 helped advance personal computing capabilities and paved the way for the development of further advanced computer systems, introducing new applications and programming languages, including the implementation of a BASIC-2 compiler that supported up to 8 KB of application RAM.Though less commercially successful than its predecessors, the MC-82 remains an iconic computer model, and its design principles and components deemed innovative, albeit less repeated than its previous iterations.
