Brand: Decca

Decca Deram was a British record label and studio that operated from 1963 to 1974. It was originally established by the Decca Records company as a sublabel for innovative and experimental music. The name "Deram" was coined by combining the first two letters of the names "Decacord" and "Decca Amplifications."Deram released a wide range of music, including avant-garde jazz, electronic music, folk, world music, and classical music. Some of the most notable artists associated with Deram include David Bedford, John McLaughlin, Kiki Dee, and Grit Laskin. The label is particularly well-known for its inaugural release, "An Introduction to Chenille" by Delia Derbyshire, one of the pioneers of electronic music.Deram recorded and produced many classical and orchestral music pieces using new recording techniques developed in-house, which came to be known as "Decca Tree" and "2-4 Stereo," these were Norman Smith’s inventions. Deram Studio, which was officially opened in 1967, was designed in collaboration with acoustician Dr. Harold M. Marshall. Deram Studio was one of the first studios in London to feature mixing consoles with automation, a feature that became standard in recording soon after. It also offered musicians the luxury of being able to listen to their recordings through headphones rather than speakers.Deram's impact on the music industry went beyond just recording studios and record labels. Decca Deram played a significant role in promoting contemporary classical music in Britain, which at the time was still in its nascent stages. Its innovative approach to music production set a benchmark for other record labels, both in Britain and abroad, in terms of technical and creative excellence, leading to collaboration and subsequent recognition for some of Deram's engineers and producers. In 1974, Decca Records decided to discontinue the Deram label as the company opted to refocus its attention on pop music. Despite its short existence, Decca Deram proved to be an influential name in the music industry, influencing the careers of several musicians and composers, and contributing significantly to the growth of progressive music. Many of the recordings released under the Deram label are today regarded as classical works, and they continue to influence and inspire modern composers and musicians.
