Brand: AMC

The AMC AV81 was a military transport aircraft developed by the American Motors Corporation (AMC) during the 1950s. It was designed to meet the requirements of the U.S. Army for a cargo and personnel transport aircraft that could operate from short, unimproved airstrips. The AV81 had a unique design that included a fixed, reverse-pitched propeller on the tail vernier engine for additional lift during takeoff and landing, as well as a large, asymmetrical loading door on the right side of the aircraft. The AV81 could carry up to 14 troops or 4,000 lbs of cargo and featured a rugged, Allison-powered engine package capable of handling rough terrain and rugged conditions.Although several AV81 prototypes were built and tested in the 1950s, the design was not ultimately adopted by the U.S. Army due to perceived shortcomings in performance and reliability. Despite this setback, the AV81 remained an important development in the history of military transport aircraft, demonstrating some innovative engineering solutions to the challenges of transporting troops and cargo in austere environments.
