Brand: AMC

The AMC (American Motors Corporation) 3100 (mkII) was a mid-size sedan produced by the American automaker American Motors Corporation (AMC) from 1982 to 1987. It succeeded the AMC Concord and was part of the automaker's rebadging strategy, aimed at reducing costs and boosting sales volume. The 3100 mkII was rebadged variants of cars produced by other automakers, such as the Renault 25, which was the basis of the 3100 mkII, built under license by AMC in the United States. The 3100 mkII featured a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, or an optional 3.8-liter V6 engine, with front-wheel drive. It had a sleek, modern design that included a quad headlight front-end and aerodynamic body contours. The interior of the 3100 mkII was spacious and comfortable, with a large trunk and roomy rear seats. The 3100 mkII was somewhat successful in the market, selling around 215,000 units during its production run. However, AMC's fortunes were on the decline, and the company went bankrupt in the late 1980s. Chrysler Corporation took over AMC in 1987, and the last AMC 3100 mkII rolled off the assembly line in January 1988, replacing it with the Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth-branded versions. The AMC 3100 mkII, while a curiosity in the history of American motoring, serves as a symbol of AMC's attempts to succeed in a highly competitive market during the 1980s.
