Brand: Sphinx

The fifth myth in the series of stories about the Sphinx from Greek mythology is the one that involves the philosopher Oedipus. According to the legend, the people of Thebes were suffering from a terrible plague that seemed to have no end. The Oracle of Delphi revealed that the curse could only be lifted if the people of Thebes were able to solve the riddle of the Sphinx. The Sphinx was a female creature with the head of a woman, the body of a lioness, and the wings of an eagle. She would sit at the foot of a hill, called Kolonus, and ask people passing by a riddle. Those who failed to solve the riddle were immediately killed and devoured by the Sphinx. The riddle was as follows:"What walks on four legs in the morning, two legs in the afternoon, and three legs in the evening?"Many scholars and sages had attempted to solve this riddle, but all had failed. Oedipus, a young prince from the nearby city of Corinth, overheard the terrified people of Thebes discussing the curse. Determined to help, Oedipus set out to solve the riddle. With his sharp intellect and keen mind, Oedipus was able to deduce the answer to the riddle. "Man!" he proclaimed. "In the morning, man crawls on all fours as an infant. In the afternoon, man walks on two legs as an adult. In the evening, man relies on a cane to walk with three legs, symbolizing dependence and weakness in old age."The Sphinx was defeated, and the town of Thebes was saved. Oedipus returned to Corinth as a hero, but his victory was short-lived. In a tragic twist of fate, Oedipus unwittingly solves another riddle—the one that would forever change his life. For he later learned that he, himself, was the answer to that riddle. While solving the riddle, Oedipus unknowingly revealed another terrible truth about himself. "I am the man who killed the king, married the queen, and now discovered the awful truth concerning my wife and mother," he exclaimed in despair. With that, Oedipus realized the enormity of his mistakes and blinded himself in remorse for his past transgressions. So, in this story, the Sphinx serves as a metaphorical obstacle for the people of Thebes, challenging them to think beyond their current perspectives and to confront their innermost fears. Only through their understanding and acceptance of themselves, could they overcome the Sphinx's tricks and escape the curse. In the end, it is Oedipus's limitless wisdom and sharp thinking that ultimately triumph over the Sphinx and the plague that had been haunting the town of Thebes.
