Brand: Sphinx

In Greek mythology, the story of Sphinx involves a mysterious creature that terrorized the people of Thebes. This creature was half-human and half-bird, with the head of a woman and wings as well. The Sphinx would waylay travelers on the road to Thebes and ask them a riddle: "What goes on four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening?"If the traveler could not answer the riddle, the Sphinx would kill and eat them. However, one day a young hero named Oedipus arrived at the riddle's answer: "Man! In the morning, he crawls on all fours as an infant; in the afternoon, he walks on two legs when grown; and in the evening, after a long day, he walks with the help of a cane, which makes him seem to have three legs."The Sphinx, angry and ashamed by being outsmarted, cast herself off a cliff and died, bringing an end to her reign of terror over the people of Thebes. The story of the Sphinx has been interpreted as a representation of the human need to solve mysteries and overcome challenges, as well as a metaphor for the ways in which life often presents us with complex puzzles that must be faced and solved.
