A moon supernova, also known as a Type Ia supernova occurring in a binary system with a companion moon, is a theoretical scenario proposed in scientific literature. While a moon cannot directly explode, this hypothetical event would involve the destruction of a white dwarf star, which is a dense and degenerate remnant of a Sun-like star, due to the tidal forces created by the nearby moon.In a binary system, the white dwarf is typically in a close orbit with a companion star, which is either a red giant or a massive main sequence star. As the companion star evolves, it can begin to transfer matter onto the white dwarf, causing it to gain mass and potentially ignite a runaway nuclear fusion reaction known as a thermonuclear explosion or Type Ia supernova.However, in some cases, the white dwarf may be replaced by a moon that was once a satellite of the companion star. While this scenario is highly speculative, some researchers suggest that such a system could form during the late stages of binary star evolution, as the companion star expands and fills its Roche lobe, causing the white dwarf to be tidally disrupted and ultimately destroyed by the close gravitational interactions with the moon.Although the likelihood of a moon supernova is extremely low, it highlights the complexity and unpredictability of the evolution of stars and their associated companions in binary systems.
