Brand: Micromega

The Micromega Drive (also known as Drive 1) is an upgrade module for the Atari ST computer that was introduced in the early 1990s by the French company Micromega. This drive replaced the standard floppy disk drive (FDD) that came with the Atari ST and significantly increased its storage and data transfer capacity. The Micromega Drive used a Shugart Associates System (SAS) interface to connect to the Atari ST's 1 MHz parallel bus. It featured a 3.5-inch, double-sided, high-density (HD) format diskette drive that could hold up to 1.44 MB of data on a single floppy disk. This was a significant increase from the standard Atari ST FDD's capacity of 360 KB.The Micromega Drive also featured a built-in FDC (floppy disk controller) chip, eliminating the need for a separate FDC board. This made installation simpler and easier. Additionally, the Micromega Drive supported fast disk I/O (input/output) with a maximum transfer rate of 230 KB per second.Compared to the original Atari FDD, the Micromega Drive greatly increased the Atari ST's storage and data transfer capabilities, making it a popular upgrade for business users and power Atari users alike. It was also compatible with other popular operating systems of the time, such as Desqview and GEM. Thanks to its high capacity and fast transfer rates, it helped extend the lifespan of the Atari ST as a viable computing platform into the 1990s.
