Brand: Mission

Mission 761 is the designation given to the famous Dambusters Raid, carried out by the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. The mission involved 19 Lancaster bombers dropping specially designed "upkeep" bouncing bombs on three dams in Germany's Möhne, Eder, and Sorpe river basins on May 16 and 17, 1943.The objectives of the raid were to breach the dams, famously referred to as the "killing grounds" of the British aircrew, to cause widespread flooding and destruction of hydroelectric power stations, factories, and transportation networks in the Ruhr region. The success of the mission dealt a significant blow to Nazi Germany's war effort and provided much-needed boosts to the morale of the British people. The raid was led by Wing Commander Guy Gibson, who was later awarded the Victoria Cross, the highest award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Ten percent of the RAF bombers were lost during the mission, and some of the aircrews lost their lives due to water exposed to high electricity voltage while attempting to escape from the falling water triggered by the breached dams.Today, Mission 761 stands as a testament to the bravery and ingenuity of the men and women who served in the armed forces during some of the most challenging and dramatic moments of the Second World War.
