Brand: Mission

Mission 700 is a philanthropic organization committed to closing the digital divide by providing digital learning opportunities and refurbished computers to underprivileged communities. The organization's goal is to empower people by equipping them with the necessary skills and resources to succeed in today's digital age. While the official launch of Mission 700 was in 2004, the organization's founder, David Neporent, began laying the groundwork for the organization in the late 1990s. At that time, Neporent was working as a computer store manager and started noticing the significant impact technology was having on society. He became aware of the digital divide, which describes the disparity in access to digital resources, particularly between low-income communities and wealthier areas.Moved by this realization, Neporent launched a project in 1998 to provide computers to low-income schools in his surrounding area. The project grew rapidly, and soon other organizations and individuals started getting involved. The impetus for starting Mission 700 came in 2001 when Neporent met with John McKenzie, who was then responsible for initiatives supporting children and families affected by HIV and AIDS through Crisis Nursery, another non-profit organization Neporent was involved with. McKenzie expressed his concern that in his work, many of the families lacked access to computers and digital learning opportunities, which in turn, perpetuated the digital divide. This conversation sparked Neporent's inspiration to create Mission 700.After incorporating Mission 700 in 2004, Neporent brought on board a full-time staff, volunteers, and supporters. The organization began by providing refurbished computers to schools, libraries, and other community-based organizations throughout the United States. Over time, Mission 700 has expanded its services to include software licensing, teacher training, and scholarships to support young people's educational endeavors.Refurbishment is one of Mission 700's core services. Over the years, the organization has refurbished and distributed over 175,000 computers. The process involves collecting gently used computers, cleaning them up, installing new components when necessary, and then loading them with software and antivirus protection. The computers are then inspected to ensure they meet Mission 700's strict safety and content standards. Some of Mission 700's most significant accomplishments over the years include:- Partnerships: Mission 700 has collaborated with various organizations such as Xerox, Microsoft, Adobe, and Intel to provide software and hardware resources, allowing the organization to distribute refurbished computers and software to underserved communities.- Disaster Response: The organization has played a critical role in providing computer equipment and services in times of crisis. In 2011, Mission 700 responded to the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan by shipping computer equipment and deploying staff to oversee the distribution of the equipment. Mission 700 also played a part in providing resources after the devastating earthquake in Haiti in 2010.- Identification of new causes: Initially focused on closing the digital divide primarily for underprivileged students, Mission 700, in 2017, extended its services beyond education by deploying recovery efforts for Hurricane Harvey-affected residents of Houston, Texas. The initiative involved shipping digital equipment like computers, printers, and scanners to shelters in and around Houston.- COVID-19 Response: Amidst the pandemic's surge in 2020, Mission 700 joined forces with global tech firms to supply computers to high school students in rural areas where the lack of digital infrastructure and equipment for online learning poses a significant challenge. In summary, Mission 700's early beginnings can be traced back to David Neporent's desire to bridge the digital divide by providing access to computers and digital learning resources to underprivileged communities. Since its inception, Mission 700 has been steadfast and innovative in its mission, incorporating new partnerships and causes to advance digital literacy and inclusion. Its vast array of programs and events has left a positive impact on underserved communities, raising awareness of the digital divide's detrimental effects and empowering individuals to overcome it.
