Castle Tyne was a medieval fortification, now in ruins, located in the city of Newcastle upon Tyne in England. It was built in the 13th century as part of the defensive measures taken by the town's inhabitants to protect themselves from raids by Scottish bands. The castle served as a strategic stronghold during the many border wars that ensued between England and Scotland over several centuries. Although significant parts of the castle have been eroded by time and weather, some fragments of the original structure still remain, providing a glimpse into the rich history of this ancient fortification.The earliest records of Castle Tyne date back to 1247, when Henry III granted Newcastle market rights and the right to build a castle at Tyne. According to historical accounts, the castle was erected by Walter Grey, a nobleman who was also the sheriff of Northumberland during that time. The castle was built to protect the city from the frequent border raids that were being carried out by the Scots. The design of Castle Tyne comprised a high stone keep, defensive walls, and gates. The walls and gates were reinforced with towers and turrets, providing a 360-degree view of the surrounding area. The castle covered an area of over two acres and could accommodate a large number of soldiers and their families.During the many border wars that ensued in the following centuries, Castle Tyne played a significant part. In 1388, the castle was successfully defended by the English during the Battle of Otterburn, in which the Scottish army of James Douglas, Earl of Douglas, was defeated. The castle was securely held in the English hands until the mid-16th century when it was surrendered to the Scottish forces during the infamous "Rough Wooing" campaign by the English king, Henry VIII. The castle was subsequently destroyed by Edward VI's forces during the "Wars of the Roses".Today, the ruins of Castle Tyne are a popular tourist attraction in Newcastle upon Tyne. The ramparts, gates, and towers of the castle have been mostly eroded by time, leaving only a few remnants. One of the most fascinating features of the castle is the underground vaults and passageways. These medieval tunnels are known as sally ports and are believed to have been used to secretly sneak troops out of the castle and surprise attack the enemy. Visitors to Castle Tyne today can explore the remains of this ancient fortification, absorbing the history and mythology that still surrounds this iconic landmark.
