Synthesis Seamus, or SE for short, is a state-of-the-art digital signal processing (DSP) platform designed for research and education in signal processing and related fields. It provides a flexible and extensible platform for the implementation and experimentation of digital signal processing algorithms and systems, allowing users to explore and validate theoretical concepts in practical applications.The Synthesis Seamus system consists of a central processing unit (CPU), field-programmable gate array (FPGA) devices, digital input/output (DIO), and a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA development board. The CPU provides a host operating system (OS) environment, where users can develop software-based DSP applications using C/C++, Python, or MATLAB.The FPGA, on the other hand, offers a high-speed hardware execution of DSP algorithms by integrating optimized hardware WIP modules for signal processing tasks such as filters, correlators, equalizers, and encoders. The FPGA can be configured using the Xilinx Vivado software, which provides a comprehensive suite of design, simulation, and verification tools.The SE system supports both CPU-FPGA collaborative designs and standalone FPGA designs, providing flexibility in system implementation and performance targeting. It also offers advanced features such as DDR3 memory transceivers, Gigabit Ethernet, PCIe Gen2 interface, and various I/O options such as Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC) and Digital-to-Analog Converters (DAC).Overall, the Synthesis Seamus platform offers a rich set of resources for teaching, research, and development in the field of digital signal processing, providing an accessible and powerful environment for students, researchers, and engineers to explore, validate, and apply DSP concepts and techniques.
