SAE E101 is a standard developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) to describe the method for determining the flow properties of engine oils used in four-stroke spark ignition engines operating under varying conditions. This standard specifies the use of a machine called a cylinder tester or a rotary vane viscometer to measure the kinematic viscosity, often expressed in centistokes (cSt), of the oil. The E101 test procedure covers a range of temperatures from -35°C (-31°F) to 125°C (257°F) to provide meaningful data for engine designers and oil manufacturers to develop and select the appropriate oil for their specific application.
