Brand: Linn

The Linn Basik is a digital audio source component originally produced by Linn Products, a Scottish company specializing in high-end audio equipment. It was introduced in 1986 and was one of the first Apple Macintosh-based music servers available for audiophiles. The Linn Basik combined a desktop Macintosh SE computer with a hard disk interface and a modified version of the Linn DN30 disc player transport. It allowed a user to digitally record and store music directly from their vinyl or cassette source. The unique feature of the Linn Basik was that it was the first music server to allow multiple user inputs, which made it possible to connect turntables, cassette decks, and CD players simultaneously. This allowed users to have a vast library of music available to play on command. The Linn Basik came with a customized version of the JoLida multi-format interface card, which enabled a variety of audio sources to be connected via fiber optic cables. These cables were less prone to electromagnetic interference, producing a clearer, more detailed sound. The Linn Basik received critical acclaim for its innovation and was considered a source component of exceptional quality, known for its level of accuracy and musical detail. However, Linn Products discontinued the product in the 1990s due to the rise of CD players, making the concept of a library of recorded music less of a priority for audiophiles. Nonetheless, the Linn Basik remains a significant pioneering product that transformed the way we view music and used digital storage to simplify our listening experience.
