The Hitachi IA-1000 was a series of mainframe computers developed by Hitachi in the late 1980s and early 1990s. These computers were designed to meet the needs of large organizations in industries such as finance, government, and manufacturing.The IA-1000 systems ran on Hitachi's proprietary processor, the HACL1 (High-Address Computing architecture Level 1), which was based on the VLSI (Very Large Scale Integration) technology. The machines had a maximum memory capacity of 4 GB, and their throughput was up to 40 MIPS (Millions of Instructions Per Second).The IA-1000 series offered advanced features, such as virtual memory, disk arrays, symmetric multiprocessing (SMP), and high availability features (HA). The systems could support hundreds of online users, thanks to their scalability and multi-processor architecture.The IA-1000 computers were widely used in Japan and other Asian countries, and were known for their reliability, stability, and compatibility with IBM's S/360 and S/370 architectures. Some notable organizations that implemented Hitachi IA-1000 systems include National Australia Bank, BellSouth, and the Government of Singapore.Hitachi eventually replaced the IA-1000 series with the SuperHITAC Z series, which featured up to 64 processors and a maximum memory capacity of 256 GB, while maintaining backward compatibility with the IA-1000's interface and programming model.
