Element 302, also known as gallium sodium hexathiogallate (GSH), is a compound used in x-ray imaging as a contrast agent for certain bodily structures. It is particularly effective in imaging the thyroid gland, salivary glands, and the gastrointestinal tract due to its high attenuation of x-rays. GSH is taken orally as a solution or in the form of a barium-gallium compound prior to imaging, and its contrasting effect allows radiologists to better distinguish between these structures and surrounding background tissue. GSH is also used in some angiography procedures to enhance the visibility of blood vessels, blood pool imaging, and lymphatic function studies. While it has similar properties to barium compounds, GSH has lower toxicity and is deemed safe for human use. The use of GSH as a contrast agent is still under investigation in other medical applications beyond its current indications.
