Bladelius Balder, also known as Baldr, Baldur, or Baldr Address (Baldrs Lidel), is a figure from Norse mythology. In the mythos, Balder was the son of Odin and Frigg, and was known for his goodness, wisdom, and purity.According to legend, Balder had a prophetic dream in which he saw his own death, and as a result, his mother Frigg collected oaths from all things in the world, including stones and trees, to swear not to harm Balder. Loki, the trickster god, however, discovered that the mistletoe plant, although young, was not included in Frigg's oath collection. With the help of a blind woman, named Hygrath, Loki created a spear made from the mistletoe plant and gave it to Hoder, Balder's blind brother, to throw at Balder during a game. The spear struck Balder, who then died. This tragedy caused great sorrow, and Odin's somber mood led to the belief that winter would never end as long as Balder's death remained unavenged. The gods and goddesses then went about trying to revive Balder, eventually seeking out Hel, the goddess of the underworld, who agreed to return Balder to the realm of the living for a certain number of weeks each year, so that he could once again join the world of the living, which gives rise to the return of springtime. The story of Balder, and his seasonal return, represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth that is intrinsically connected to the changing of the seasons.
