Brand: Allied

The Allied Model 399 was a semi-automatic pistol developed during the Second World War by the Allied Engineering Company based in New York City. It was designed to meet the then-new "M1911-type" pistol requirements outlined by the Office of the Quartermaster General for the United States military in 1942. The Model 399 was- like its contemporary competitors- intended as a replacement for the M1911 .45 ACP pistol used by the US military. The Model 399 featured a number of advanced design elements, including a double-action/single-action mechanism, a decocking lever, a removable magazine release, an adjustable rear sight, and a checkered grip. It was also built to use a same-size magazine as the M1 Garand and M1 Carbine, in an effort to standardize ammunition for different small arms.Although the Model 399 showed promise as a field-worthy alternative to the M1911, it was not ultimately adopted by the US military due to a number of factors, including issues with reliability and difficulties in manufacturing during wartime. However, it did inspire several later pistol designs in the post-war era, including the Taurus Model 66 and Smith & Wesson Model 39.Despite its limited military career, the Allied Model 399 remains a historically significant firearm, representing an early attempt to modernize the standard issue sidearm for American forces. Today, surviving examples of the Model 399 are highly prized by collectors and firearms enthusiasts, and continue to provide insights into the evolution of military pistol design.
