SAE R102 is a recommended practice (RP) document published by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) in the United States. It provides guidance on testing lubricants for fuel economy under controlled laboratory conditions using a four-cycle Otto engine, specifically the Student Engine Oil (SEE) engine, which is commonly used in engineering programs for testing and research purposes. The RP covers procedures for evaluating the friction and volatility characteristics of the lubricants using a friction and volatility tester (FVT) and a zero-speed penetration tester (ZPT), respectively. The RP also specifies test methods for determining the ash content and viscosity of the lubricants, as well as procedures for conditioning the lubricants before testing. SAE R102 aims to provide consistent and repeatable results for evaluating the fuel economy properties of lubricants, enabling engineers and researchers to compare and select lubricants for specific applications.
