Pliny the Elder, also known as Gaius Plinius Secundus or Plinius Maurus, was a renowned Roman author, naturalist, and political figure who lived during the first century AD. His most famous work is the "Naturalis Historia," a comprehensive encyclopedia of knowledge about the natural world, which was considered a powerful reference work during Pliny's time and is still studied today. Pliny also served as a high-ranking official in the administration of Emperor Vespasian, and he died in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, while trying to collect information on the event for his encyclopedia.
