Plinius Hautonga (born 29 January 1953) is a Maori Anglican bishop and academic. He was the first indigenous Bishop of Polynesia, serving from 2001 to 2012 in the Anglican Church in Aotearoa, New Zealand, and Polynesia (ACANZP). Hautonga is the Principal of Te Rau Kahikau, theological education and training college for Maori located in Auckland, New Zealand.Hautonga was born in Whangape, Northland, New Zealand in 1953. He grew up in Maori-speaking Rudolf Steiner and Catholic communities where he attended Rudolf Steiner and Catholic schools. Hautonga holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology from Auckland University, and a Master of Theology degree with a first class honours distinction from Trinity Theological College, Auckland, New Zealand.Hautonga spent several years as a grassroots activist in youth and community development organizations, then as a high school teacher in decile 1 and 10 schools in South Auckland. In 1979, Hautonga began his theological studies at Trinity Theological College, graduating with First Class Honours. He completed a Doctoral Degree at Australian College of Theology (1995-1999) and a Masters Degree at Cambridge University (1999-2000).In the 1990s, Hautonga sat on the Te Aka Maori committee which created the written form of the Maori language's modern form. In 2001, he was consecrated as Bishop of Polynesia, becoming the first indigenous bishop in that diocese. Hautonga was also the first Anglican Bishop born and raised in New Zealand. Hautonga installed the first statue of a contemporary aboriginal in Christ Church Cathedral in Christchurch which was a gift from the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples of Canada.In May 2012, it was announced that Hautonga had been selected as the next principal of Te Rau Kahikau, the theological education and training college for Māori in Brick Bay, near Pauanui, New Zealand. He took up this position in January 2013.Hautonga is married to Dr. Audrey Cooper Hautonga (Medicine).
