Brand: Pierre Clement

Pierre Clement PL7 was a Belgian steam locomotive, specifically a Mallet compound locomotive built in 1912 by Société Anonyme des Ateliers de Construction du Bas-Rhin (SABR) in France for the Belgian State Railways (SNCB). It was designed to operate on the steep gradients of the Plateau de Herve, a plateau in eastern Belgium. The PL7 was a 2-8-2 compound locomotive, meaning it had two sets of cylinders, one high-pressure and one low-pressure, connected to a common crankshaft and driving wheels. This design allowed for a more efficient use of steam, as the high-pressure steam was used for initial acceleration and the low-pressure steam was used for the later stages of locomotive travel when the load was lighter and the speed was lower. The PL7 was retired from mainline service in the 1960s and preserved by the Belgian Railways Historical Society. It remains in service today as a heritage locomotive and is frequently used in special events and train tours. Its unique design and historic significance make it a beloved and important piece of railway history in Belgium.
