Brand: Muse

The MUSE M-21 RD is a next-generation interferometer designed for astronomy observatories. Its full name is the Multi-colour Large-area Survey of Spiral fabRICS, and it is located in the northern Spanish region of Galicia at the Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) site on the Roque de los Muchachos Observatory. The MUSE instrument is unique in several ways. Firstly, it uses a Wide Field (WF) mode covering a 1x1 arcmin (0.2 x 0.2 degrees) field of view. This is over five times higher than that offered by MUSE's companion instrument at the European Southern Observatory's (ESO) Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile, making it possible to examine and study much larger areas of the sky.Secondly, it is a multi-object spectrograph, allowing up to 24 targets to be observed simultaneously. This feature helps MUSE to gather comprehensive spectral data, facilitating detailed investigations of galaxies, stars and gas clouds.Thirdly, it has high spatial resolution, further emphasised by the excellent atmospheric conditions at La Palma and through the use of adaptive optics. This makes detailed observations possible, such as distinguishing between distance differences to stars or measuring the rotational speeds of galaxies. Finally, its independently calibrated channels are used to operate in multiple spectral wavelengths simultaneously. The RD, or "red and dead" mode, which is where MUSE is currently operational, uses channels between 780 nm to 1015 nm, covering the so-called "red" part of the spectrum with high sensitivity.. The MUSE M-21 RD is part of a larger research project called the Galician Astronomical Observatory's Large Binocular Telescope (LBT) Multi-object Optical and Near-IR Spectrograph (MODES), coordinated by Ignasi Rodriguez-Aranda, Professor at the University of Valencia and Director of the Research Group on Astrophysics and Cosmology (GFA) at GCU Campus Gandia, funded by the Generalitat Valenciana and the FEDER programme from the European Union. This state-of-the-art spectrograph is, therefore, not only a valuable instrument for scientific research, but it also represents a collaboration between major European institutions and demonstrates the possibilities for innovation in the region of Galicia.
